What Causes Pain And Tenderness Under The Ribs While Coughing?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Aug 2016
Question: About a week ago, I noticed tenderness on/under the ribs on my right side just under my breast. When I press I feel very slight pain. I recently have been doing exercises involving opening/stretching out my arms to the side and wonder whether this may be a strain. Or something else.

When I cough I feel a pain at that location.

Addtl notes: pain waxes and wanes. Not present when walking. If I stretch on my right, I feel pain in upper back below shoulder.

Perhaps this is just associated with Parkinsons?

Brief Answer:
Could be due to costochondritis.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. I do not think there is any relationship with Parkinson's. Rather, there are two possibilities to consider:
* Costochondritis - It is characterized by inflammation and tenderness of the cartilaginous ends of the ribs. If that is the case, your pain would be localized on the ribs. Hot compress should provide some relief.
* Liver pain or gall bladder pain- You need to be examined in order to determine the exact location of the pain and what it signifies. The size of the liver, the palpability of the gall bladder etc. are some factors to consider.

I do not think that it is due to strain. I would insist you to visit a doctor and to get yourself evaluated.

Regards
