What Causes Pain Around The Navel With Bloody Mucus Discharge?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jul 2015
Question: Hello Dr.

Yesterday I had sharp pain around my navel. After ultra sound and ct scan they diagnosed with a tiny umblical hernia. Dr advised Surgery required but not urgent. Non incarcerated with adjacent subcutaneous inflammatory edema. No abscess.
Today there was a slight discharge of white and blood mix ( mucus like ) substance from navel.
What could that be.

Brief Answer:
Less likely to be problem. See doctor to rule out fistula.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I have gone through your query, I shall try to provide you with best and scientific suggestion.
As you have mentioned that, there was inflammation with edema,it is understandable that a slow leak from any viscus is liable to track to the surface. I don't think this should cause any problem to you.

But for better picture or is better to visit doctor, he on evaluation will prescribe antibiotic and also one can rule out possibility of fistula ( even though less likely).
Mean while observe for any pain or if there is any increases in discharge and avoid act that increases abdominal pressure like coughing, laughing and constipation.

Hope you have got something useful from this and I'm here to answer any further queries. If you don't have further questions do close it.

Wish you good health and take care.

Brief Answer:
you likely need surgery, though not emergency

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Umbilical hernia regresses in infants but older person require treatment. that you need surgery, but it is not an emergency.
Umbilical hernia usually presents as bulge and is more when the abdominal pressure increases. Stomach pain is not always the symptom of it.

As mentioned earlier, even though it does not appears to an fistula but better to rule it out. So need to visit doctor for that.

Hope I have been of some help to you. Take care.
