Brief Answer:
Pain for few seconds unlikely due to gall stone

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
A single gall stone can be seen in 10 percent of the population. If there is a single stone measuring 10 to 15 mm in the lumen of gall bladder then it can be left alone as long it is not causing any symptoms. It will be clear in your ultrasound report regarding the number, size and critical position of the stone if present. If your pain lasted only a few seconds and resolved by itself then most probably it might be a of muscle origin.

You may like to discuss in detail about your gall stone should you have a copy attached to your query or the report findings given in detail.

A gall stone is supposed to be in a critical position if it is blocking the tubes carrying bile from the gall bladder ie the cystic duct or common bile duct. This causes persistent pain with clinical jaundice in most people.

Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Dr.Vivek

Thank you for your reply. My gallstone was diagnosed 3 years ago as a 2.2cm XXXXXXX gallstone. No other problems picked up by ultrasound. I do have a lot of muscular problems along with arthritis. I currently have an almost constant dull ache around and over my right ribcage.

Brief Answer:
A repeat ultrasound scan is essential

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

I find that since your last ultrasound scan was done 3 years back, you may get it done again to know if the stone is responsible for your constant dull aching pain. A 2.2 cm stone is a large one and it can grow or cause obstruction to the outflow of bile from the gall bladder resulting in cholecystitis (gall bladder wall inflammation). If this is excluded then your pain can be said to be from other causes like muscle and cartilage origin.

Hope your query is answered.
