Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns
You have been experiencing neck pain and you would like to know what would be causing your pain. In a young adult like yourself the most common cause of neck pain is muscle pain. the muscles of the neck can be irritated and cause pain from spasms anywhere from your shoulder up into your scalp. This can be treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen and with massage therapy. Occasionally chiropractic manipulation may also help.
The other causes would be a pinched nerve from your spine but not very likely unless accompanied by some significant injury, MVA with whiplash.

yes you can use icy hot
Detailed Answer:
Neck pain has numerous causes including muscle tension, arthritis in the vertebra and pinching of nerves from herniated disks. There is no way to tel just by how you feel or where the pain is coming from to diagnose the exact cause. To find the root cause of neck pain usually takes an MRI.
I would recommend to you right now use the icy hot or other topical lotions with an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen. If the controls your pain then you don't need the expense of an MRI. I would not recommend an MRI unless you were in excruciating pain and no other treatments helped.
