What Causes Pain During Urination Despite Taking Medicines For UTI?

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Aug 2015
Question: I am being treated for a UTI with the 2nd round of antibodics (Sorry, don't have the name of first round but one I'm on now is sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. I'm on day 4. Have had this continuing problem with no cessation for over a year. I am wondering if it is truly an infection and if not, what it could be. The pain upon urination is continual but not intense. I am also on a diuretic. Would that cause a urinary tract pain? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
if no infection detected on urine examination consider other causes

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

If urine analysis and urine culture (examination of the urine in the lab ) show evidence of infection then infection is the cause of the symptoms but if the urine culture does not show up any bacteria, then there is no infection present and there is another cause of your symptoms.

Other possible causes, if infection is not likely based on urine assessment, are: interstitial cystitis or urethral syndrome .
In some women, may be due to gynecological causes related to the cervix.

These conditions (, interstitial cystitis and urethral syndrome) tend to over lap in terms of symptoms and in some cases, treatment. Many would consider essentially same or similar conditions.

Urethral syndrome is characterized by pain on urination and passing urine frequently with no evidence of infection.
Treatment with different possible meds such as muscle relaxants, hormonal meds, pain meds, tricyclic antidepressants (not used for depression but for pain)

Interstitial cystitis can cause cause discomfort on urination also associated with passing urine frequently for most.

If there is no evidence of continual infection then your doctor may consider one of these as a possible cause

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
