Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
Hello & thank you for submitting your question.

The symptoms, nature & onset you describe sound suggestive of a musculoskeletal injury. There are many muscles involved in shoveling & you may have strained something in your core musculature group or even in the rib or lumbar area. Also, as you suggest, a strained muscle in one area of the body can definitely affect & cause (or "refer") pain in other areas. It is also possible the shoveling might have caused inflammation to the spine or back which is causing a nerve compression or pinching. Unfortunately, it is impossible to definitively determine what exactly is the specific nature (exact muscle(s) or possibly nerve) of your injury without a good physical examination in person. It would be reasonable to see your physician for an assessment and possible imaging studies if your symptoms do not improve within a week, if they worsen, or if there is development of new symptoms/pain (to rule out any serious damage or injury to soft tissue or internal organs). For the meantime, rest with light stretching and range of motion exercises and warm compress to the torso area may be helpful in reducing the pain. Hopefully you will be feeling better soon.

Sincerely,
Dr Galamaga
