What Causes Pain In Bladder While Urinating?

default
Posted on Sat, 7 Feb 2015
Question: I suffered from an enlarged prostrate since Sept 2011. The problem I was facing then was pain in bladder while urinating and had to wait for 7-8 minutes before urine could pass. I was on medication till April 2014 when doctor suggested to undergo TURP as one night I could not pass urine and felt pain.
After the TURP in April 2014 there was relief. However now I have to get up during night in an interval of one hour to pass urine. I wake up in an interval of one hour when I feel little pain in the bladder and urge to urinate. Now I have to wait 1-2 minutes before urine could pass. Is there any problem?

Brief Answer:
Need bladder training and pelvic exercises.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. There is no pathology present.
2. You need to train yourself to control urges. Smaller urges needs to be ignored and filling should be more and more. Day time, longer training, night time - also similarly as much as possible.
3. Take limited fluids after 4 pm. Even smaller urges, which will disturb sleep will cause you to wake up and go to the bathroom. You should learn to ignore these smaller urges. Around 2-3 weeks, if trained, you will forget about smaller urges and sleep disturbance will be less.
4. The amount of urine accumulation is very less due to every hour interval. So bladder pressure has to be more to urinate small quantity. It will take more time before you pass urine. If the quantity is more, you can pass it immediately, otherwise. Pelvic exercises could be helpful in improving muscle strength, so urination will be easier.

Not to worry, Need to try bladder training. There is no infection or other cause. Ignoring smaller urges and taking limited fluids after 4 pm would be helpful. Take more fluids during daytime and try bladder training too.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.

Thank You Dr. XXXXXXX
I shall adopt your advice. Pls do let me know that my sleep gets disturbed by little pain in bladder along with urge to urinate. I will try and control small urges but pain continues until I pass urine. What about it?
Moreover since my TURP in April 2014 there were two instances (latest on 15 Dec 2014) when I could not urinate in spite of the urge and with much pain. When it first happened my urologist used a catheter to help me pass urine and get relieved of the pain. He advised and taught me to use the catheter whenever I face such problem. Is this a normal after TURP or is there anything to worry?
Need your advise on the same.

Brief Answer:
Possibly urethral sphincter spasm

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking again.

After TURP, this is rarely seen and maybe due to urethral sphincter spasm at occasions.
Not to be worried about this. It can happen on occasions.
As the sleep gets disturbed at night, it would be the main reason for hourly intervals. Otherwise, during day, I assume, you would not be going hourly.

Low fluid intake, bladder training and pelvic exercises will be helpful.

Hope it helps.
