What Causes Pain In Chest While Jumping In A 10 Year Old?

Posted on Wed, 8 Jun 2016
Question: Hello, I have a 10 year old son who is complaining of chest pain (in the middle, near xiphyed) when he jumps. He has no pain when he is not jumping nor trouble breathing. Only when he jumps. He plays cricket and currently learning bowling and I am wondering if that might be related to his pain. Would this be perhaps a muscle issue?

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX Welcome to HCM,

I've gone through your query and understand your concern for your son..

Well it seems if your son was bowling quite a bit before this pain started happening then it can be related to that .. As with bowling certain muscle fibers get pulled and with repeated stress over the same area, they get inflamed and cause pain..

Since this episode started after bowling practice, I'd suggest you to let the bowling on hold for the time being, as you're correctly pointed out that it can be a pulled muscle or even neuro-muscular trauma..

Now feeling pain during jumping also involves the diaphragm and diaphragmatic nerve, muscle endings , so any trauma or injury to that particular area can cause that kind of pain as you've mentioned ..

Just simply get a Chest X-ray (PA view) done to rule out any gross structural abnormality or secondary trauma due to physical exertion..

Keep him rested for the time being.. Steam inhalation 3-4 times a day will help ..even though the chest is clear still focus on curing the cold completely in the mean while..

If the pain doesn't get subsided by 2-3 days then it'll be better to take him to an Orthopaedician for a thorough physical check-up of the area..

Let me know how he stays in the due course..

Kind Regards
