What Causes Pain In Epigastric Region Radiating Towards Upper Back?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Sep 2015
Question: I have pain that starts in the epigastric region and then localise on the upper back - over the spine below the scapular margins. Upper GI scopy showed prepyloric ulcers for which I have received treatment. USG abdomen was normal. The pain persists inspite of treatment. Should I look for another cause?

May be required....

Detailed Answer:
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist (DM).

Have you underwent repeat endoscopy to see that ulcer has healed or not?. Are you still taking any proton pump inhibitor as even after H.pylori eradication. One has to continue with proton pump inhibitor for 6 to 8 weeks.

Other than peptic ulcer other cause of pain in epigastrium that radiates to back is of pancreatic origin and may be gallbladder. If your response to the two questions are in the positive, then you will have to visit your doctor who will examine and advise tests like liver function test, serum lipase levels and may be CT scan abddomen.

I hope I have answered your query and this will help you. If you have any further query I will be happy to answer that too. Remain in touch and get-well soon.
