default
Posted on Fri, 10 Oct 2014
Question: Hi,

After my first child was born I have this pain in the left hips, which is quite excruciating. It is worse when I sit up, or lying down. when i try to get up from a lying down position it hurts a lot. It goes when I am walking. My daughter is 6 months old now and I have started to partially breastfeed her.

Could you please advise the nature of the problem and when this will go.

Brief Answer:
Post pregnancy avascular necrosis of left hip

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar

After going through your query possibility of post pregnancy avascular necrosis of left hip joint should be considered. During pregnancy blood supply of femoral head(ball of hip joint) decreases, the cause of which is unknown .Due to this some parts of femoral head become dead and tend to collapse ,a condition called avascular necrosis of femoral head. Femoral head became rough. Hip joints movement become painful due to joint roughness.

Therefore in this context is it advisable to get MRI of both hip joints. I recommend MRI as X-rays may appear normal in the initial stages (it's only been 6 months since your delivery). You should visit an orthopedician and plan for this test.

In the meantime, we can emperically treat you with pain killers such as diclofenac/ibuprofen. Your local doctor will know about these drugs.

If MRI scan confirm presence of necrossis, the definitive treatment is surgery.

Second possibility is simple muscular pain for which rest and analgesics are required. However as I said earlier MRI scan is important and worthwhile.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Wishing you good health.

Take care
