Posted on Mon, 29 Jun 2015
Question: I have very bad pain in the leg below the knee - painful to touch and painful to move and walk - not muscle, maybe nerve.
Could it be my work situation as I walk on hard floors 8 hours a day?

Brief Answer:
Unlikely ot be Nerve

Detailed Answer:
HI

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for posting your query.

Well very unlikely for a nerve problem to cause pain only below the knee . If it was due to nerve pain then pain would have been from thigh to toes. Also its not due to your work as it doesn't causes one sided pain or severe pain.

I feel the pain might be due to an abscess ( Pus collection ) around knee joint or it could be due to Ligament Injury of the knee joint.

In that regard I advise you to either consult an Orthopedic doctor or get a MRI of your knee joint and revert back with reports.

For pain relief you can use Hot compresses, also get a prescription for Tramadol tablets and use it.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .

Regards.

Thank you Dr. for your answer. I did have a couple of falls recently so it could be an injury. There is no external swelling so does this mean it could be an abscess inside and if it is, is your treatment still applicable? Would this go away with rest?

Brief Answer:
More likely to be Ligament Sprain.

Detailed Answer:
HI

There need not be external swelling for abscess . But usually abscess may causes redness over the skin or it will be associated with fever. You have neither of these. So the chance of Ligament injury or strain is more than that of abscess.

For the Ligament injury , rest can definitely help. The recovery depends on the severity of injury.

You can take rest for 5 days and observe what happens . If there is good improvement in your pain then continue rest for 2 weeks . But if there is not much of improvement then its better you get the MRI scan done.

If you notice any redness of skin or run any fever then it indicates Abscess . In that case you better consult the doctor as it requires drainage.

Hope this information was useful to you.
