Brief Answer:
Muscle spasms and Nerve irritation due to new strenous job.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.

It is not uncommon to have some muscle spasms and nerve irritation when you have not been active and start a new strenuous job or work out regimen. It sounds as if he may have strained his back and that this has caused some nerve irritation in the nerves going to his leg.

He should use ice on the low back and areas of pain in his leg. He can use an anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen. If the pain is severe, if he is not able to control his urine or stool, or if his leg is truly dragging then he should go to the emergency department. If not, then he should try the ice and ibuprofen and rest as much as possible. If it gets worse or is not resolving in a few weeks then he will need to see a doctor. Physical therapy may also be helpful but a physical therapist would probably want him to see a doctor first before they worked on him.

I hope he is feeling better soon
