default
Posted on Tue, 11 Aug 2015
Question: i have had for the past 3 days short sharp cramplike pain attacks in the lower left abdomen. They last for about 15 seconds in intervals during the whole day. I have not been woken up by the pains at night.

What might be the cause and what can I do to eliminate the pain?

I am a 81 yr. old male.

Brief Answer:
Following information is needed;go to ER if pain is unbearable...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

Pain in the lower left abdomen during the day but not at night is related to bowels and uro-genital tract.

I need to know if you are also having problems with:
- bowel movements (constipation? diarrhea? alternating?)
- urination (burning? pain? incomplete emptying? semen leakage?)

These information will help me determine the right cause to the pain you are feeling in the lower left abdomen.

For the moment, I advise to:
- take pain-killer medications (mephenamic acid or buscopan)
- avoid constipation (if you have such problem)
- increase water intake
- apply warm clothing to the abdomen

If the pain is unbearable, you can go to ER for immediate evaluation and treatment.

Looking forward to have the requested information in!

I have alternating bowel movements.
At times I have burning urination because of chronic prostatitis. When it gets really bad I take 2 Ciproflaxin 500 mg tablets for 10 days. Right now I do not have this burning. The pain felt on the left side is between the lower rib cage and the hip.

Explained below...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Sorry for the late reply due to my XXXXXXX work.

The pain you are referring to be between the lower rib cage and the hip might be related to possible:
- urinary tract infection although you are not having burning sensation
- colitis attack (bowel problems)

I advise to:
- run a urine-home testing to rule out UTI and get it treated accordingly if positive; if negative, then, can take only magnesium citrate as urine pH regulator.

- you are saying to have alternating bowel movements; which is also suggesting possible bowel problems. Recurrent use of ciprofloxacin (which is an antibiotic) is altering the intestinal flora and might trigger abdominal cramps as you are having now.
If you are having gas or bloating, I advise to take probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora together with simethicone to reduce gas.

Prostatitis attack is also to consider especially if you have not been careful with your diet. An antiinflammatory/pain killer medication like mephenamic acid can help reduce pain together with another course of antibiotics.

If the pain will persist and would be unbearable, should go to ER for immediate evaluation and treatment.

Wish fast recovery!
