Question : i am a 69 yr old woman having pain in my lower left leg. i see a chiropractor weekly for back pain & saw him yesterday twice. he told me to ice my lower back thinking it was probably sciatica. Ive been doing that but its still very painful from knee down. I have had sciatic nerve pain before on my RIGHT side but it has been painful from buttox all the way down my leg. this is just from knee down so i dont really think its sciatica. very painful . i am suppose to go to work as a grocery checker today but its hard to stand or walk. stayed home yesterday as chiropractor recommended. ny suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Possibility of sciatica and deep vein thrombosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for choosing healthcaremagic for posting your query.

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar.

I have gone through your question in detail and understand your concern. Probably it can be due to sciatica and second probably is calf deep vein thrombosis. First possibility is sciatica due to lumbar spondylitis with neuropathy. It can be confirmed by x ray and MRI of lumbar spine. Its treatment is rest in lateral position with both hips and knees flexed. Analgesic such as ibuprofen can be taken for pain relief. If pain is severe then tramadol can be taken in place of ibuprofen. Neurotropic agents such as Mecobalamine are of use in reducing neuralgic pain. Diacerine and glucosamine are useful in delaying and preventing degenerative changes.

Second possibility is calf pain due to venous thrombosis. Pressing of calf muscles will be painful. Venogram can confirm this. Analgesic such as ibuprofen are of use and low dose aspirin can be of use. You can discuss with your doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
