What Causes Pain In Neck Above The Collarbone?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Jul 2014
Question: Hi. about a month ago i started noticing a kind of stinging/stitching pain in my neck above my collarbone. It feels like its muscular and it feels like i am very tense or strained in that area.
I can sometimes feel the pain when i breathe in or cough. When i get extra tense or strain. The first time it accured it was very intense, and even hurt a little bit, but now that it accures more regularly, this pain is making me a little bit worried. (But it's not as intense as it was in the beginning..) I have been struggeling with tense mussles in my neck and back, maybe this has something to do with it? Could you maybe help me with some advice? What do you think is wrong?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for your query.

It's not uncommon in young people like yourself to have these neck pains. These might be posture related. Though self limiting, it need not be underestimated.

You have to follow a healthy lifestyle. All you need to do is correct your posture habits, like appropriate neck position while working on computer, avoiding pillow while sleeping, or while making sudden movements. I assure you this discomfort will go away unless you do something to aggravate it in your routine. You need to do neck isometric exercises, which you can learn from a physiotherapist near you.

Do not self medicate, or need not take prescribed medications at all unless absolutely necessary. Rest is the trick here, and specific aforesaid exercises are your only long term insurance. You may benefit from hot fomentation and frequent stretch breaks at work.

If it still fails to subside have it examined and investigated by your Orthopaedician soon.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.

Take care
