What Causes Pain In Right Foot?

default
Posted on Mon, 30 Jun 2014
Question: Hi, I am a 44 year old female - been living with SLE for 23 years now. Recently I started feeling pain in my right foot and thought it was maybe a ganglion. However, Sunday morning I woke up with a VERY sore foot and it has been getting worse everyday. I work in a hospital and asked an orthopod this morning about it. He sent me for X-rays and Sonar and on the sonar report they mention that there is an effusion in the ankle joint, probably due to bursitis.

How do they treat this normally? (This is really, really sore. I have been living with joint pain caused by the lupus all these years and can cope with that. But this pain, is really debilitating, I'm even battling to walk!)

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for your query.

Bursitis of ankle is normally treated by-

Rest- Resting your ankle as much as possible may decrease swelling and keep the bursitis from getting worse. When the pain decreases, begin normal, slow movements.

While sleeping, avoid lying on the side that has bursitis. you can prop your foot up on a pillow to raise your ankle.

Icing- Ice causes blood vessels to constrict (get small) which helps decrease inflammation (swelling, pain, and redness). Put crushed ice in a plastic bag or use a bag of frozen corn or peas.

Heat: Heat helps decrease pain and stiffness. Apply heat on your ankle for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times each day.

So both cold and and heat is important for your bursitis pain.

You may continue taking ibuprofen and tramacet for your pain.

You may be given shots of medicine called steroids to decrease inflammation.
This medicine helps decrease bursitis pain.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.

Take care
