What Causes Pain In Tail Bone And Painful Lower Back?

default
Posted on Sat, 7 Jun 2014
Question: 11 months of tailbone pain, can not sit, progressively getting worse as now i cant stand for too long either as my whole lower back & pelvis hurts. As previous questions show... I had ct last year which showed my s4-5 had erosion, with soft tissue thickening, had following bonescan which was normal so no follow up done. Recently gotten worse so mri was done which the report said was normal, it doesnt go into great detail either. Im wondering if the s4-s5 was included on the mri? The report said coccyx mri. Should i have a full lumbar mri instead? Or a pelvis one? I also currently have a large lump between my vagina & rectum which makes it hard to gonto the bathroom. Which scan will best shiw the areas that i need it to. Im a ballet teacher, this is really starting to affect my work. The tailbone/lower back pain is extreme when sitting or trying to stand. Ive also started getting pins and needles in my feet when i sit any longer than 5mins. Thankyou for your time and advice

Brief Answer:
Due to coccydynia.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Your symptoms are suggestive of coccydynia caused by inflammation of the coccyx bone. The symptoms are generally worse when sitting for prolonged periods of time, or with direct pressure to the tailbone area.
An MRI scan of coccyx covers the sacrum S4-S5 also. A full lumbar MRI scan is not likely to give any additional information. The large lump between vagina and rectum is likely to be a soft tissue swelling. This can be diagnosed by a direct examination and FNAC of the area. A pelvic scan will help in detecting any soft tissue masses in the pelvis.
Follow these measures for relief from the symptoms:
1) Avoid sitting down for long periods of time. When seated, do not sit on hard surfaces and alternate sitting on each side of the buttocks will help. Also, lean forward and direct your weight away from the tailbone.

2) Take adequate rest and apply cold compresses, avoid any injury to the affected area and take some antiinflammatory and pain medications like ibuprofen(motrin) or diclofenac. Some severe cases with persistent coccydynia are treated with local cortisone injection and surgical resection of the coccyx.
You can consult a neurologist for a proper treatment.
3) You can also use a "doughnut" cushion or pillow to sit on. This cushion has a hole in the middle of it to prevent the tailbone from contacting the flat surface.
4) Also eat a high fiber diet foods to soften stools and avoid constipation.
I hope this answers your query.

I had iron injections for 8months that wouldnt have anything to do with the tailbone pain would it? I havent had them for over 15 months but the bruises are still there and still very painful touch

Brief Answer:
Not related to the pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The iron injections are given deep within the muscle and will not cause a coccyx pain. The staining of the skin and mild pain are slow to leave. Doing a hot fomentation in the area will help.
Hope my answer is helpful.
