Question : I saw a urgent care last Tuesday for uti. Just prior to getting the uti my menstrual cycle lasted 2x's as long as normal and was still spotting. that seems to have stopped. I finished the antibiotic on Saturday and was pretty much feeling fine. Sunday night I abruptly vomited. thought maybe it was food poisoning. Have eaten only toast yesterday and a bowl of plain oatmeal today and drank water. Still having nausea but no more vomiting. I've had a bowel movement daily since sunday which is odd because I usually only go every 3 days. Today I've started having cramps on my lower right abdomen. Am I just being paranoid or could something be wrong? no fever, I've had my flu shot, no blood in my stool etc.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,

If you are having pain in the lower right abdomen, and you have been nauseated, there is the possibility that this is appendicitis.

Appendicitis pain is usually worse with walking and bringing your leg up when lying down.

The nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramping can also be from the flora (microorganisms) of the bowels, that keep it balanced, being disturbed by having taken an antibiotic. This would also explain having BMs at a frequency that is not typical for you. For a disturbance in the balance of microorganisms of the gut, a probiotic can be helpful, but it takes time for things to reset.

Another possibility is that the lower UTI may have ascended and is causing a kidney infection. But with a kidney infection, in addition to nausea, there is usually pain in the flank on the side of the infected kidney (back pain above the waist).

Without being able to see and examine you, I can't say for sure.

I don't think you are being paranoid. It would be reasonable for you to go in to be seen to discuss these possibilities. Especially if the symptoms I described for appendicitis or kidney infection fit.
