default
Posted on Thu, 26 Feb 2015
Question: I went to urgent care last night due to pain in my left upper abdomin. They did an exray and said my colon is full of stool. I have been having diarreah for wuite some time now so i didnt even think it could be stool.
I took miralax last night and 2 bottles of magnesium citrate. I have been having liquid diarreah all day that is red im guessing from the magnesium citrate since it was red.
I have not had any stool come out. Is this a cause for concern and what should i do next?

Brief Answer:
Further examinations advised....

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

The pain you felt in the abdomen was due to distension of the bowels from stool being there for days. If I was your caring doctor would advise to run further diagnostic tests to determine the right cause including:

- colonoscopy
- abdominal ultrasound

2 . The red color of feces you noted is due to magnesium citrate. However, fecal occult blood test is advised to rule out GI bleeding.

3. After completely emptying your bowels, it is normal to experience no bowel movements.

You should also follow a healthy diet regimen :
- eat more foods high in fiber content
- increase water intake
- continue taking miralax and laxatives

Hope it was of help!
