What Causes Pain In Vein At Incision Site After Donating Blood?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Feb 2015
Question: I have donated blood 5 days back. But after 4 days on donation suddenly I am feeling pain in one of the veins in upper part of the hand from where the blood has been donated. When I am stretching my hand above my head or when i am folding my hand I am feeling pain in the vein. If I press that area then also I am feeling the pain. Also feeling some sensation in the hand.

Could you kindly help what needs to be done as I have to travel after 3 days.

Brief Answer:
It could be due to inflammation

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Welcome to HealthcareMagic.

The pain could be due to inflammation of the vein. Usually it happens after blood removal. There will be small blood clot. It will slowly reduce.

If you feel the vein is hardened then you need to apply local heparin (thrombophob) cream to the area twice daily and anti inflammatory drug. Along with that apply ice pack twice daily.

If there is no hardening of the vein then just apply ice pack and take anti inflammatory like aceclofenac for 3 days.

Hope I have answered your query. If any further queries are there I would love to help.

Hi,

Ok , but I am feeling it in upper hand near to shoulder and not near the area where needle has been introduced. Does this has any impact and how much time it will take to be back in normal. Yes, the vein feel hardened and I feel pain when folding the hand or stretching it over the head.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
It will take roughly 3 to 5 days

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Yes you may get pain radiating along the vein. It may extend till shoulder and also while folding hand.

Since vein is hardened you need to apply local heparin cream and other treatment which I had told in last answer.

It may roughly take upto 3 to 5 days to reduce. Pain should start reducing within 2 days of starting treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. If any further queries are there I would love to help.
