Question : what could cause sudden pain from waist down both legs only last a minute.

I Dr Jadia have gone through your question.
Pain from waist radiating to both legs has two main reasons
1. Nerve compression
2. Dehydration
If you had pain only on last night then no need to worry.
But if you had long standing history of pain then you should do x ray of lumbar spine to rule out compression, so do this after discuss with your family physician.
In dehydration only water couldn't help, take lemon, salt and sugar with water. As these help in replenish the lost minerals in body.
