Posted on Tue, 4 Nov 2014
Question: My 15 year old son is having a lot of pain under his ribs on the right side up high. I was told he has stomach ulcers and was given Ranitidine 300mg to take one time at night we are in the first week of the 2nd month. At this time I'm contemplating taking him to the ER because of his pain level he can't get any relief. His has stopped milk, tea, coffee he is down to water, oatmeal and peanut butter is about the only things that don't cause pain. Fever in normal, if it's ulcers I need to know how I can help him when he has a flare up.

Brief Answer:
Needs evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain on the right side under the ribs can be due to gastric ulcers but other causes like gall stones or hepatitis also need to be ruled out after an ultrasound scan.
To decrease the symptoms
Avoid hot and spicy foods and beverages - they worsen symptoms.
Avoid coffee and other beverages.
Lose weight if needed.
Eat small but frequent meals at regular intervals.
Avoid lying down immediately after a meal. A minimum of 2-3 hours should be lapsed after a meal.
Raise the head of his bed 6 to 8 inches by securing wood blocks under the bedposts. Just using extra pillows will not help.

I hope this answers your query.
