What Causes Pain, Swelling And Numbness In Arm After Starting Glimepiride?

Posted on Wed, 22 Feb 2017
Question: I was recently taken off of Metformin and given glimepiride and Januvia. I have taken them for one month. I am currently experiencing spasms at the base of my skull on the right side. Also, pain, swelling and numbing down my left arm into my middle finger. Is this a reaction perhaps to the change in medications. I have had severe pain for five days. I am currently adding Ibuprofen 800 mg and Baclofen 10mg for the symptoms.

Brief Answer:
No, it is not caused by antidiabetic drugs:

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
The medication you are taking actually (Both glimepiride and Januvia) do not cause these side effects.
Glimepiride may cause low blood sugar and januvia may cause gastrointestinal disturbances (the most common).
It seems like a rheumatological problem that needs a detailed clinical evaluation and probably some radiological exams, as your treating physician will suggest.
If Ibuprofen and baclofen do not relieve the symptoms, you need to see a physician to change the treatment.
Hope i have been helpful.

Kind regards,
Dr.Mirejta
