Question: Hi Dr. Grief... I have set an appointment to meet with my regular Dr. day after tommorow. In the meantime I wanted to run my symptoms by a health professional. On Sunday night I had trouble sleeping due to what seemed to be lower back pain that seemed to radiate to my left side just above the hip. It seems to be a slightly sharp nagging pain that is there no matter what position I try. I find that taking Aleve helped me to gain some comfort to perhaps get a little sleep during the last two nights. The pain also seems to be much less if I am sitting erect or standing but I am still aware it is there. Today now I am noticing a general numbness over the skin with some occasional itching with no apparent irritation or rash... but I have noticed that the numb skin feeling has gradually increased over the last few hours.

Brief Answer: Short bed rest and analgesics restore normalcy Detailed Answer: Hi.Thanks for writing on HCM. I am glad that most of the reports are well within the normal limits. Thanks for sharing the same. Pain the the lower back radiating to the the hip, thigh is due to the compression of the nerves coming out of the spine at that level (lumbar/sacral level). When the nerve is pressed by the surrounding structures (bone/disc) this results in pain, numbness , tingling etc. This condition is called as lumbosacral(LS) strain. After a proper examination I were to get an X-ray of the LS spine which will help me to identify changes in the spine if any.I were to treat by: Physical therapy - Apply cold packs locally (reduces pain/edema/inflammation) after local application of analgesic gel(containing diclofenac). Bed rest for a short period (<48hr) to which results in more rapid functional recovery.Avoid lifting heavy weight, sports activities which strain the spine. Medications - Analgesics with a muscle relaxant (Diclofenac or any NSAID with chlorzoxazone) taken twice daily give better symptomatic relief than Aleve (Naproxen) alone. Hope this helps you.All the best and get well soon.
