Question : I'm having pains under my breast that goes from one side to the other and sometimes is only on the left side under my breast bone. I also experience the same pain in my upper left back (like a bruise) it happens more after I eat. I do feel better if I get a massage. I saw my doctor yesterday and he reported its due to my hiatal hernia and my esophagus is a bit inflamed as I feel my back like in fire. I also have mild gastritis. Now he gave me pantoprazole 40mgs. How long it will take for me to feel better. Im frustrated

Brief Answer: may take a few days for XXXXXXX relief Detailed Answer: HI, thanks for using healthcare magic Your symptoms do sound as though they may be related to esophageal inflammation and gastritis. Pantoprazole belongs to the family of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. This family of medications is the most effective for treating esophagitis, gastritis and GERD. These medications are called proton pump inhibitors because they stop certain pumps in the stomach that play a part in releasing acid. They cannot inhibit all the pumps at once and it can sometimes take 5 to 7 days for this type of medication to get to a steady level in the body. This means that in some persons it may take up to 5 to 7 days for a maximum effect though improvement should be seen by day 2. Because of the way it is broken down in the body, pantoprazole does not build up in the system and its metabolism is not effected by multiple daily dosing. This means that if the symptoms are very intolerable you can consider using it twice daily. This would suppress the acid release more. Summary : should notice improvement by day 2 and XXXXXXX improvement by day 7 Faster if used twice daily but should speak to your doctor before adjusting the dose. I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
