What Causes Painful And Bruised Knee After A Fall?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Sep 2014
Question: I fell hard on tree roots, directly onto my knees, about 10 days ago. The right knee showed a big bruise, but the left did not show any bruising at all. However, the outside of my left knee felt exactly like it had a bruise when touched. Both knees hurt extremely badly when kneeling on them to get into bed.
Just a few days ago, I touched a mop bucket with my left knee to move the bucket. I didn't push, or bang it hard, just enough pressure to move the bucket which was on wheels. The contact line with the bucket was directly in the middle of my knee cap.
Immediately my knee hurt really badly, only this time with a very strong burning sensation, and exactly where the mop bucket edge came in contact with my knee.
Now, a few days later, I still feel that same burning sensation when I press the middle of my knee cap with light pressure. I also still feel the bruise feeling when I touch the outside of my left knee. The bruise on the right knee feels much better, but still tender even when just softly. I don't feel any pain when standing or walking though.
The worst is when I get down to the floor on my knees, and I lean back so that I am sitting on my feet. The pain is unbearable, and I have to come back to a kneeling position. This position is still uncomfortable, but it is much better than when I was sitting on my feet.
Could anyone tell me what they think might be going on under the skin? I find it weird that my left knee feels bruised, but shows no sign of bruising.

Brief Answer:
Looks like you have cartilage injury in knee

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case, and I think you are having cartilage damage in knee joint and it has cause pain during sitting on the floor. When you stand then that damage part is not coming between bone so it is not as painful.
I would suggest you to get MRI of both knee joint. It will give us information so that we can decide about further management.
If there is cartilage damage then you might need physiotherapy and minor surgery to correct that. It is done through arthroscopically.
If there is softening of cartilage ( Chondromalacia) then it can be treated with calcium and Dicerin.
Avoid squatting and sitting cross leg til you get these investigations. It will increase in damage.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there is any other followup question.
Thanks

Thank you for your response. Is this something that in time may heal on it's own? To get an Mri will cost me $200. Is there anything I can do at home that could help the healing process?

Brief Answer:
Avoid few activities and pain killer

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I understand that MRI is little costly test. If you do not want this then we presume that you have minor cartilage damage. So I would offer following suggestions to you.
1. Avoid squatting and sitting cross leg
2. Hot water fomentation
3. Compression bandage to decrease knee swelling.
4. Voletran ointment
5. Brufen tablet for pain after discussing with your doctor
I hope these measures will help you in pain relief. Let me know if there is any followup question.
Thanks.
