Question: My mother has a painful bump on the heel of her foot. Up until yesterday it looked like a wart that didnt bother her much. Yesterday it hurt a lot and now looks like its infected. She is going to the doctor tomorrow but we are concerned, any treatment ideas or what this is.

Brief Answer:
Infected corn most probably

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HCM..

I read history and looked at photos you uploaded. I deeply feel that most probably your mother is having infected corn.

Corn is a localised thickening of skin in conical form, base is narrow and superficial part is broad. It mostly occur on pressure bearing areas of sole. There is hard collection of keratinous material. There may be pain. Sometime, it may be infected with bacteria.

In your mother, there may be infected corn.

You consult dermatologist and have firm diagnosis. Blood tests may be done to rule out DM,HIV and other immunocompromised conditions.

I would like to suggest as follow...

- a short course of antibiotics in proper dose
- antiinflammatory and analgesic drugs to relieve pain and inflammation
- avoidance of bare footed walking
- application of antibiotic cream
- cleansing the area with antiseptic like dettol
- after clearance of infection, paring the corn may be done
-or removal of corn surgically
-or application of 12% salicylic acid solution may be done
- to prevent relapse, your mother should wear soft insoled shoes

I hope these hints may be helpful for treating your mother's problem. Please consult dermatologist and have perfect treatment.

I hope you got my answer. Still, any query..you may ask.

Thanks.

With best wishes....
