What Causes Painful Lymph Nodes In Neck Area Post Alcohol Consumption?

Posted on Sat, 29 Aug 2015
Question: Hi, sorry i meant to ask a follow up question but pressed accept.
Here is a bit of background.
A couple of days ago i had 2 glasses of wine (I dont drink very often) I noticed that as i was drinking the 2nd glass i began to get quite tipsy (although i dont drink often, i normally can have at least 3 before i start to feel it or maybe 4). About 30 min after drinking i begain to experance pain in my neck in the area of my lymph nodes. This pain stayed for quite a few hours. I also had left abdominal pain. The pain in my neck was kind of a heavy / pressure / pulsating pain but also strong at the same time (i have never experanced this before). I couldnt sleep with the pain but on some point i fell asleep and when i woke up in the morning the pain was gone and i had no hangover (which i would have if i was actually as drunk as i felt the night before).

Other symptoms i have been expersncing:
Fatigue
Difficulty breathing fully (i do have asthma - although it is under control)
Little lump in groin (been there for a while at least 12 months - has not changed size and it is movable, not painful though).
I've been getting viruses on and off all year. Last one nocked me out for 6 weeks
I dont get fevers no matter how sick i feel

I have been seeing my GP for the fatuge, who took a blood test (my GP couldnt see anything worth worrying about in them).

I have to admit i did google the pain in glands after drinking and noticed that i have 3 symptoms of lymphoma. This is why i am here writting to you because i dont want to google anymore. I dont want to believe that it is lymphoma but i dont want to ignore the symptoms either.

What got me concirned was the pain after drinking. Could it be something else?
I do not have an infection as my blood tests came back negitive for infection.

I also want to know if it is important to mention the pain when drinking to my gp next visit next week?

When i posted my question last night the dr said to monitor and wait.
What am i monitoring and waiting for?

Your opinion would be apreciated.

Thank you for your assistance.

Brief Answer:
FNAC of the groin swelling,

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I did review your query mam.
sharp pain precipitated with drinking is not specific for any finding.
the least one could think of is an attack of gout with drinking, but that manifests with large toe swelling, which is not in your case.
sometimes strong drinks can cause irritation of esophageal mucosa and can present as sharp neck pain. This can be your case but wines generally dont cause that.
howeverin yourcase I believe it may be dueto position while drinking that mightbe awkward and may have caused mild neck muscle pull.
now if you have noticed a swelling in your neck, it is a different thing.
my little concern is the groin swelling. Can you tell me more about it. I mean its approximate size and how did it start and did you take any meds for it.
at best a fine needle aspiration which is an office based test can help answer the question about your groin swelling.but I would be in a better position to answer if I know more about a groin swelling.
chances of lymphoma look unlikely given its size is not changed in 1yr, but as a doctor we should confirm each finding and get to root of its cause.
waiting for your reply.
wish you all the best.
sincerely,

Thank you for your responce.
The pain was not associated with my posture. I know the difference between muscle pain and gland pain as i have experanced both (gland pain from glandular fever a few years ago and neck pain from a car accident 7 years ago) The pain was definetly sore glands.
I am not very good at figuring out how big thing like this are but i think the lump in my groin is between 6 or 10 mm and shaped like an ovel/ tear drop. You cant tell its there by looking at me. There is another little one next to it that i only noticed recently. I dont remember when i got it or how. It hasnt changed size although mybe shape a little. I have not told my Dr about it as it has not changed and when i see my gp i forget about it. I have been feeling so unwell recently and it keeps coming back to my mind.
Even when i have had antibiotics in the past it has not changed. I am not currently on any medication.
I can also feel small glands at the back of my neck on the right side but thats normal right?
Thank you for your assistance.

Brief Answer:
Hi I would advice the following.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thank you for your reply query mam.
First of all if you can feel small glandular structure under side of your mandible(lower teeth bone) and if they are on both sides equal they are normal. However, Please ask your gp to examine them once to determine if they have the glandular feel or lymph node feel.
About the groin pain, less than 1 cm is more often just a reactive nodal swelling to some infection you might have had in past. It can persist even after antibiotic. However, if you have noticed a change in size or even shape I would advice you to ask your gp about it. He can palpate it and then probably best decide whether to go for a fine needle aspiration cytology( mostly not needed right now).

But do mention about both the swellings to your doctor. THere is no major concern, but just caution is best in matters of health. Most often I believe it is reactive nodal swelling in groin.

About the pain that you had with alcohol, one possibility could be sialadenitis due to stone in gland ducts, that can some times cause sore glands and pain in neck with food intake. however nothing specific to alcohol that I know of. It can happen with any beverages or food as food stimulates salivary glands , but stones or duct obstruction might cause pain and mild soreness. If this pain occurs again, please consult your doctor and get appropriate imaging tests done to see the cause.

So all in all the chances of lymphoma are extremely low and mostly as you described it seems to be benign nodes. But it would be good to get them examined by your gp.
I hope this helps.
let me know if you have any more questions or concerns mam.
Wish you all the best.
sincerely,
Dr Parth Desai.
