What Causes Painful Stiffness In Left Arm And Swollen Hands?

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Oct 2015
Question: My Brother was bitten by a BUG(we think a spider)? On his left arm...That has been several weeks ago. He noticed stiffness in his left arm and some pain. This pain seemed to move up the left arm, across his upper back, and now his hands have swollen, to where he has difficulty making a fist. Also he has developed some breathing difficulty and heart irregularity...He has seen a doctor or doctors but they don't seem to concentrate on the bite in his left arm. They are treating the symptoms rather trying to find the source...He has to go on Oxygen at times(COPD), has lost his appetite and food doesn't taste the same, also lost weight...It seems to me that something neurological has been taking place, either from the bite its self or a pathogen that was on the spider or(if it was a spider), bugs fangs! This has been a rapid onset, within the last two weeks...The only variable I am aware of at this time is the bug bite, this has seemed to have been brought since that happened...I'm a retired Histologist, so my knowledge is only general knowledge....Looking for something that might open a door not yet opened! Hope to hear something from someone, with a new idea...My Brother is 65 years old, he's been a non-smoker for 30 years or more!........Thanks you XXXXXXX N Cook (Spike)

Brief Answer:
Cellulitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

The bug bite followed by pain and swelling of the left arm is most likely to be cellulitis. It is very common after an insect bite, untreated cellulitis spreads and can lead to other complications.

Here is how you should go about it

1. The treatment is with antibiotics like tab clindamycin twice a day for 7 days
2. Magnesium sulfate dressing of the hand every alternate days
3. Send for complete blood count and blood culture to see how bad the infection is
4. Other causes for breathlessness ( Chest and cardiac) should be ruled out. I am sure your doctors have already done that. Infection can exacerbate COPD and that will require catering

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me
