What Causes Painful Swollen Testicles And Groin Pain After Using A Urinary Catheter?
Question: my husband has been doing self catherization for a few months due to a urinary retention issue.
He has had work-ups and examinations done and subsequently started with the catheter.
For the last few days he has had pain in one side of the groin and testicle and now both testicles
appear swollen.
Thoughts? Would this be considered an emergency? He has an appointment with his urologist in two
days time for unrelated check

Brief Answer:
it needs urgent investigation
Detailed Answer:
it could be an infection of the testes. Swelling, increased temperature locally and perhaps even fever may be caused by orchitis. There are other causes of testicle swelling also, like torsion (which is a medical emergency and causes a great deal of pain) and edema related to heart failure or other conditions.
An ultrasound scan can be very helpful in distinguishing between them. Clinical examination is very important. If it is indeed an infection, immediate antibiotic treatment would be required.
