What Causes Palpitations While Suffering From PACS And PVCS?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: I have benign PACS and rare pvcs. My cardiologist says they are absolutely benign as my heart is structurally healthy and my stress test was normal. The one thing that concerns me a little bit is my heart rate. I have a resting heart rate around 54 -60 bpm. He says this is also normal. I have lost 80 Lbs over the last year through good diet. I was 295 lbs and now I am 216. The reason for my question today is that I get this feeling that food comes up my esophagus it can last a couple of hours to days sometimes but is not constant. I also have acid reflux. Whe I get this feeling I check my pulse and it is considerably slower. Can this be causing my resting heart rate to be lower. Sometimes when I get this feeling I can feel a pressure in my throat and I'll check my pulse and it is in the 50. Can this feeling be stimulation of the vagus nerve?

Brief Answer:
Improvement will depend on treatment of underlying causes..

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,
I understand your current concerns.

1. Acid reflux (GERD), weight reduction and electrolytic imbalance will aggravate bowel problems and will exacerbate heart palpitations.

2. If you :
- get a proper GERD treatment
- take supplements to replace the lost electrolytes
- eating healthy and regular meals
all of these will improve your symptoms including heart rate and GERD problems.

3. Vagus nerve is the one which is innervating the internal organs. Various stimuli can cause its stimulation including electrolyte imbalance or irritation of the upper GI tract due to acid reflux.

However, this is part of the normal physiological functions of our body. We should do our best to eliminate those factors that would aggravate such problems and implement those that would ameliorate your situation (as mentioned earlier).

Hope it helped!

Hi Doctor Thank you for your response. I am trying some natural remedies to treat the gerd. Also I am doing CBT for the anxiety. I understand what you are saying but are the palpitations caused by the gerd or anxiety such as pacs and pvcs dangerous? I know it will take some time to get better but is it safe to have these symptoms?

Brief Answer:
Keep in mind that it's safe to have these symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

You shouldn't worry about palpitations (PACs and PVCs) they aren't dangerous as long as all cardiac examinations are normal. Apart from general discomfort and anxiety they will not cause any trouble to you.

It will require some times for treatment to reach the desired effect, but you should keep in mind that it's safe to have these symptoms.

Wish you health!
