What Causes Persisitent Sore Throat And Hoarseness?

Posted on Fri, 4 Jul 2014
Question: Hi, A cat scan showed I had mildly prominent lingual tonsils and a vallecular cyst at the base of the tongue. I've been experiencing hoarseness, throat soreness and more so reduced air , seems I struggle to breath at times and am clearing my throat a lot which also feels like it has a lump in the back of it when swallowing. I hardly sleep more than three hours a night , can't seem to get a good nights sleep anymore. I went to an ENT and she said she didn't think my lingual tonsils or vallecular cyst were big enough for removal . In the meantime I am very uncomfortable and am not feeling good as I'm exhausted and my throat is always sore. Do you have any advice? I'm considering a second opinion?

Brief Answer:
probabaly acid reflux

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using healthcaremagic,

Persisitent sore throat , hoarseness can be due to acid reflux.
I will need a few more details regarding your symptoms few evaluate your problem better.
1) How long have you been having these symtoms ?
2) Any heartburn ?
3) Are your symptoms worse while lying down ?
4) What have you been taking for
the reflux ?
5) Have you undergone upper GI endoscopy ?
6) Reason for not sleeping at night ? Is it snoring or heartburn or something else?

Hi,
I have acid reflux, hiatal hernia and have been on Nexium and now Omeprazole for over 10 years. I never had a sore throat from this nor did I have trouble swallowing and the feeling I have a lump in the back of the throat. In the last year or so it was discovered that I have thyroid nodules(subcentimeter) and most recently a palpable lump in the midline soft tissue of the neck which resulted in the cat scan that found the vallecula cyst at the base of the tongue and the mildly prominent lingual tonsils. The Palatine tonsils were removed over 20 years ago and I still have the adenoids. I would say the symptoms are worse lying down and I find myself fasping for air. I had a spirometer test and that was normal. Last endoscopy was about 8 years ago and just the acid reflux showed up which I've been taking medicine for. I was wondering if the lingual tonsils and the vallecula cyst could be contributing to my trouble swallowing and gasping for air and the soreness and hoarseness in my throat and voice and preventing me from sleeping?

Brief Answer:
not to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam,

A large vallecular cyst can cause obstruction in breathing.

Lingual tonsils do not cause difficulty in breathing.

Neither vallecular cyst nor lingual tonsils cause hoarseness and sorethroat.

A large hiatus hernia can cause severe reflux and shortness of breath - asthma like symptoms.

In my opinion it is worthwhile to get another repeat endoscopy done to assess the status of the hiatus hernia and reflux.

Regards,
Dr Rajkishori Godhi
