Question: My son-in-law uses antacids regularly. from time to time he has bouts of "food poisoning," but there is no identifiable source of the poisoning. Each time no one else who ate with him has any symptoms but his symptoms can be severe: chills, vomiting, terrible stomach pain that cause him to cry they are so bad.
In the past several months he has had two such episodes, the last one sent him to the emergency room. What other ailments can produce these symptoms?I did not select oncology; you did. I selected internal medicine.

Brief Answer:
give him properly cooked food and avoid raw food

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thanks for putting your query in hcm. I appreciate your concerns regarding yiur son in law. There may be few reasons for the recurrent GI infections.
1. Use of antacids regularly as it leads to decrease acidic medium in GI tract wgich leads to increase in abnormal bacteria in the GI tract which is the cause of recurrent infections
2. Get some tests for his immunity like serum immunoglobulins levels especially IgA levels as if they are decreased it leads to recurrent GI infection
3. Also check his complete haemogram and blood sugar levels to see for any decrease in counts or increase blood sugar levels respectively. Both of these can cause recurrent GI infections.
4. Get his stool examination also
For this I will suggest you to visit an immunologist for physical examination and evaluation.
Meanwhile ask gim to take tablet rifaximin 400mg thrice aday for 10 days in a month for 6 months. Rifaximin is mild antibiotic which acts only in GI tract and has no systemic absorption. It will lead to decrease in abnormal bacteria in intestine. Also give him probiotic to increase the good bacteria in the intestine. Both these ar available OTC. Take care that his food his properly cooked and and if possible avoid raw foods. Food should be hygienic and home made and not from vendors. I hope I have answered your query and this will help him. Wish him a good health.
