Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr XXXXXXX
Cough is frequently due to upper respiratory tract infections.
Upper respiratory tract infections are usually viral in nature so only symptomatic treatment will suffice.
Cough can also be present in lower respiratory tract infections.
You will require a central cough suppressant like dextromethorphan.
Please see a doctor to rule out a lower respiratory tract infections and also for the prescription of the cough medicine.
Till then please follow some general measurses like-
1) Give voice rest. Do not scream or whisper.
2) Drink plenty of warm fluids.
3) Do warm salt water gargling 5 times daily.
4) Do steam inhalation 4 times daily.
5) Avoid cold foods and cold drinks.
6) Avoid air conditioning.
7) Get some rest.
See a doctor.
Regards,
Dr Rajkishori Godhi
