What Causes Persistent Cyclic Vomiting While Treating GERD?

default
Posted on Wed, 9 Mar 2016
Question: My son (age 28) has been diagnosed with GERD and cyclic vomiting. He has had it for the last 10 years and has been going to a GI consultant here in town who has prescribed NORTRIPTYLINE HCL 75 MG CAP, PANTOPRAZOLE SOD DR 40 MG TAB and ONDANSETRON ODT 8 MG TABLET. Unfortunately he has to be admitted to the hospital at least every 6 months with the vomiting. They give him IV fluids, pain meds for the severe cramping. Finally last month a doctor at the hospital suggested he go to a GI specialist, not the GI consultant we have been seeing. I dont see what we are doing currently is helping him and I'm wondering if a specialist would have a better idea as to how to get him better. He never knows when the attacks will happen and it makes it hard to work when you have to be admitted to the hospial for 3-5 day stays-not including the ER visits for a few hours. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Cyclic vomiting- GI Specialist and Neurologist's opinion MRI

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
To recapitulate: Male/28 - colonoscopy and appendectomy a few years ago - many X-ray - if none is conclusive indicate no obstruction - diagnosed and treated as GED with cyclic vomiting - for years means when he was 18 years old - undergoing treatment - has to get admitted at least every 6 months - suggested to go to a GI Specialist -

Second opinion of a Gastroenterologist should be always sought after. He can have absolutely different perspective of the case and as every one has his own experience, can help for a proper diagnosis and further management. I am sure an Upper GI Endoscopy must have been done.
MRI of the brain in cases of "cyclic vomiting" is warranted as well as an opinion of a Neurologist too. We have to get a proper assessment and possible curative therapy.

I hope this answer helps you in decision making, please feel free to ask for further relevant query if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
