What Causes Persistent Diarrhea With Constipation?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Apr 2015
Question: After pneumonia, about a year ago, I developed IBS-like symptoms. Diarreah mixed with constipation. Generally loose stools most of the time. Feeling tired sometimes and lots of gas from time to time. Indigestion with some side and epigastric pain (though this has improved a lot over the past 2 months). Stools messy and sometimes orange or yellow. Other times are normal colors. Difficult to wipe, feel some leakage.

Got colonoscopy- clear

Upper enoscopy- clear

Abdominal CT with contrast- all clear

Blood tests including liver enzymes and thyrod- all clear

Doc/gastro says I have IBS/ functional bowel problems with non-erosive functional GERD/NERD

Is she right? worried about gallbladder, but she said it's fine from CT. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
Stool analysis/culture of feces advised...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

I was reviewing the reports of tests you did and I found no stool analysis. If you have not had such test till now, I highly recommend to discuss with your doctor to run:
- stool analysis
- culture of feces
to rule out alteration in intestinal flora.

If nothing would be found even in stool analysis, then, all your symptoms might be related to:
- GERD
- IBS
as long as no organic lesion was found in examinations you did.

All the best!

Brief Answer:
Yes, you should do fecal candida exam

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXXX
I am glad to know that your stool analysis has been normal.
I strongly advice to do fecal candida exam, because your symptoms has started after pneumonia and probably after antibiotic treatment. Antibiotic use may cause intestinal candida.
If fecal candida exam is negative than your symptoms are related with IBS and GERD.
Wishing you all the best!
