What Causes Persistent Fever And Red Spots All Over Body?

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Jul 2015
Question: My nearly 12 yr old grandson has been ill with what they thought at first was strept throat. He was put on antibiotics. 3 days later he was very ill, he was sent to Children's hospital,
where they did a cat scan, iv solutions, & blood work. They thought he might have mono.
They have not responded with an answer. His antibiotics were changed. Now one week
later he wakes up with red spots all over, especially his face, feet, etc. feeling feverish.
What can this be? Contagious?

Brief Answer:
Could be sepsis

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
If he is still feverish and having red spots it could be an indication of bloodstream infection or sepsis.
It is better to get his blood culture and complete blood count done afresh.
He may need upgraded antibiotics.
It could be contagious, yes. Better to continue inhospital treatment.
Red spots could also occur with low platelets and deranged coagulation.
Discuss these with your doctor.
Wishing your son good health.

Dr Arun
