What Causes Persistent Hand Tremors In A Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Patient?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Oct 2016
Question: I developed hand tremors about three weeks ago. I had been biking and or kayaking every day for a three week period. I have carpal tunnel which flares up when I bike or work in the yard. My hands do go numb while riding and I have to shake them while riding. I have been home for two weeks and have not been riding my bike. I am not having pain or numbness, but my right hand Is still shaking. I have been wearing a brace at night and taking ibuprofen. My restless right leg has gotten more annoying, but it doesn't get me awake at night. Is there anything else I should try before making an appointment with my doctor?

Brief Answer:
Hand tremors are unrelated to carpal tunnel syndrome.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your past medical details and current symptoms. Hand tremors are not related to carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

Tremors need further evaluation to determine the cause. Common causes include anxiety and essential tremors. In some cases, if there are additional symptoms such as rigidity of limbs and slowness of movements, we also need to rule out Parkinson's disease.

You could take propranolol tablets (beta blockers) for a few days to see if tremors reduce. If they do not, then, it would be better to see a Neurologist.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
