What Causes Persistent Headaches And Left Sided Neck Pain?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 May 2017
Question: two days ago, I started having the combination of a persistent headache (which is rare for me), and a mild/moderate pain on the left side of my throat/neck, just below where my tonsils would be. I am 58, overwight be about 15 lbs with normal blood pressure (120/80), and reasonably good cholesterol. I exercise 2-3 times per week and have a reasonably healthy diet. Do I need to be concerned about arterial blockage?

Brief Answer:
As of now, symptomatic treatment is sufficient.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and I would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details. Based on this, there is no need to worry about blockage of carotid artery (located in the neck). The symptoms to suggest blockage would be blurring of vision, weakness of arm, face or leg, numbness of arm, face or leg, slurred speech. Headache alone is usually not a symptom.

As of now, you can take symptomatic treatment with diclofenac or ibuprofen tablets.

If symptoms persist, we should exclude temporal arteritis (inflammation of an artery in the temple region). This can be done by checking ESR (blood test), which is elevated in this condition.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
