What Causes Persistent Mouth Sores After Having Saphris?

Posted on Mon, 21 Jul 2014
Question: I am taking Saphris and have developed mouth sores. One of your doctors recommended taking it alternately sublingually, supra lingually, and bucally. It's helped a lot but the sores are persisting. Is there a mouthwash or some other medication that could treat the sores themselves? Also,, I seem to be retaining a lot of water. Can that be treated with a diuretic?

Brief Answer:
Yes, Mouthwash are available to treat sores.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic,

As Oral absorption of saphris (asenapine) is less and due to side effects, your doctor has advised taking the drug randomly sublingually, supra lingually, and bucally.

Even after following these routes alternately, the sores are persisting, I would suggest you to follow

1. Chlorhexidine mouthwash which may help ulcers to heal quickly. It also helps to prevent ulcers from becoming infected. It should be used twice a day.

2.Steroid lozenges can be used and it should be kept in contact with the ulcer using your tongue. This will facilitates the healing process.

3.If there is any pain painkilling oral rinse, gel, or spray may help to ease pain.

If the ulcers are persisting even after following aforementioned measures, you need to consult your doctor for oral examination.

Thank you.
