What Causes Persistent Nausea And Vomiting In A Patient With Hiatus Hernia?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Sep 2015
Question: Hi there, I am a 24 year old female. I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia last week after spending 9 days in the hospital. Saw a specialist had a scope done to get these results, and I go back this week for a follow up. My concern here, I went into the hospital because for a few weeks prior to me going into the hospital I was nauseous all the time, smells, anytime I would try to eat it was extremely hard. I puked for 6 days in a row in the hospital, lasting 5 -6 hrs straight of puking and pain in the stomach, even with iv medication of Zofran. I am now on a daily medication and another medication I take 15 minutes before I eat. After a week of this medication I am still nauseous all the time, can only drink water and even then it is hard. I still have no appetite, I'm tired and weak all the time. Please help! I know diet helps but I can't have a diet without eating

Brief Answer:
You might require Nasogastric feeding or Surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
I am moved by your painful experience.
Since you are so symptomatic I can only think of two options. But for both you should see a Gastroeneterologist and a GI Surgeon.
First option is to get you admitted and give you anti vomiting medicines and put a Nasogastric(Ryles) tube and feed you through that.
Second option is to get operated and undergo a Fundoplication which can be done by open Surgery or by Laparoscopy. This you will need to discuss with your GI Surgeon.
The hernia would not go away by medication. The symptoms however, get relieved in most patients with medicines only and surgery is required less often for Hiatus hernias. What your Doctor would have meant is that the medicines should be able to control the problem caused by the hernia.
Therefore, please go back to the above Doctors and tell them your problem as you might need more invasive management than presently.
Take care,
