Brief Answer:
A little more information required to better help you ma'am

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Could you please write back to me with the exact location of the pain and its description. Let me also help you with a few more detailed questions:

+ Is the pain running through the anterior (front) side of your leg or the posterior (back side) of your leg?
+The pain is not in your back or buttock region, but does it start from below the buttock region? You mentioned that it starts from the femur, but the femur is a long bone and so please do try to pin point where exactly it starts from (e.g. upper 1/3rd of the thigh, mid thigh, etc.)?
+Is the pain deep-seated or more superficial?
+Are you physically active or mostly inactive?
+Could you write back to me with your height and weight?
+Have you been going about strenuous physical activity or exercise off late?
+Have you recently put on or lost weight?

I look forward to hearing from you in order to help you further.

Best wishes.

Went through nerve charts to identify nerve that I think is causing it. The shooting pain starts middle of anterior left leg ( below head of femur)...From nerve charts starts at branch of femoral nerve then goes to branch....ANTERIOR CUTANEOUS BRANCH OF FEMORAL NERVE...STOPPING RIGHT BEFORE KNEE...OR/and Medialis branch. No pain in buttocks. Pain starts a little to left of anterior thigh...below femur joint...then crosses to anterior and down to right above knee joint.

As to increased activity recently...two possibilities:

1. Developed plantar fasciitis or stress fracture (diagnosed by me) in right foot...moderate to severe pain when I stand up from sitting...have to walk on toes on that foot till pain damps down...tried boot from XXXXXXX ..could not sleep with it...so bought compression stockings...and ace wrap foot as best I can to elevate toes...but aces stretch ...so really not effective...had to take 4 Advil for pain relief at night...but skin began to bruise...so take 2...which is not effective.

2. We have had like rain for month...so had to widen drainage ditches...dug with one leg on one side..and one on other...no problems or feel of tear...but PF developed shortly after.

3. Female...175..5f/5inches...have lost 30 since cardiac XXXXXXX showed 50% at Univ of Fl...and cholesterol 440...high BP....stopped taking 2 BP meds on my own as BP went back to normal...still take statin...basically on vegetarian diet...and protein shakes.

4. I am very physically active..not exercising...wanted to begin back on Bowflex...but can't wit PF.

5. Father had Prednisone 5mg for gout flare ups...took that for week...did not help any that I perceived.

6. I am under EXTREME STRESS...which probably aggravates any condition.

Hope this info is more concise...if you feel I need any specific meds...can you prescribe them? Or e-mail your diagnosis...so I can have Florida doc write it...haven't seen GP in over a year...then she will require appt etc...to verify...costing me copay of $40. I know Dr. Phil's web site docs can...hope you can if needed.

With kind regards,

Brief Answer:
Here are a few recommendations to help find the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you so much for all that extra information, it does indeed help.

Here is a list of my recommendations:

+Try using NSAIDs for pain relief (e.g. ibuprofen, nimesulide, diclofenac, etc.)
+Cold pack on the region
+Continue with the compressive stockings
+Elevation of the region whenever you are seated
+Avoid wearing tight fitted clothes
+Weight loss if you have out on weight
+Avoid strenuous exercise or vigorous physical activity
+An ultrasound of the region through which the pain is passing will help to visualise the region and also help rule out any nerve entrapment
+MRI of the spine will be required to rule out a spinal abnormality which is one of the most common causes for such a presentation

I hope you can get in touch with an orthopedician and a neurosurgeon who should work together to help find the cause for your presentation. Please also feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
