What Causes Persistent Stomach Pain, Severe Fatigue And Dyspnea?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Mar 2016
Question: Hi, I have been having stomach pains 1-2 hrs after I eat soild foods for several months now with extreme fatigue, and recently weakness and short of breath with exercise (I am fit and workout often), so I went to the doctor, he did not run labs on my gallbladder or liver but cleared my pancreas. He is quite sure that it is peptic ulcers, and wants to schedule a endoscopy to make sure or see how bad? Does this sound correct? What can they determine with a endoscopy and does food intake effect peptic ulcers?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Your symptoms seem to be related to a peptic ulcer.

I agree with your doctor that an endoscopy should be done. This is the test of choice for the diagnosis of peptic ulcer, because the doctor can see the lesion of the gastric mucosa, which are typical of ulcer and also take some champions of tissue for biopsy to exclude possible stomach cancer (which can mimic the peptic ulcer symptomatology).

Besides, other lab blood tests should be done like:

-an abdominal ultrasound
-lab blood tests (complete blood count, PCR, sedimentation rate, kidney and liver function tests, blood amylase).

You should discuss with your doctor on the above issues.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Thank you for your reply! Could it be possible to be related to Celiac? Is there a test that can be ran for that?

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

It is less probable that your symptoms could be caused by Celiac disease, because in such case you would have chronic diarrhea and a low body weight. Besides, this is a condition which is more common in younger ages.

If this condition would be suspected, anti-gliadine antibodies should be tested in your blood.

Hope to have been of help!
