What Causes Persistent Swelling, Tingling Sensation And Numbness In Face?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Feb 2016
Question: over perhaps the last 6 months I have had maybe 5 or 6 times where I have experienced significant swelling and numbness in my face. The last time was last night and I think its the worst experience so far. The swelling started yesterday around 4 PM with a slight tingling and feeling of swelling in my bottom lip on the left side. I have no pain whatsoever but by the time I went to bed around 10 PM the swelling and numbness had spread and increased. In the middle of the night maybe around 2 PM the swelling had spread to the right side of my lip and a tingling sensation had spread up the left side of my face. This morning the swelling is still there but has definitely subsided. If this unfolds as in previous experiences the swelling and numbness will be gone totally by mid day. The swelling is very noticeable and feels as though there is some build-up of liquid under the skin on the inside of my mouth which then dissipates as the symptoms recede.

Brief Answer:
Allergic reaction.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your questions and understand your concerns.

Symptoms you describe are more likely related to a local allergic reaction.

It could be caused by various substances such certain food components, medications, dust etc.

If there is associated redness of the swollen ares, angioedema should be considered too.

In majority of cases this is a harmless condition and self limited.

Use of antihistamine drugs such Benadryl should help improve the symptoms.

If the condition appears more often and more severely, you need to see your primary care Doctor and have done skin prick tests in order to know the probable cause.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

I remain at your disposal for further clarifications.

Greetings.
