What Causes Persistent Thirst And Mouth Dryness?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Feb 2016
Question: Hi dr,

Throughout the day im always feeling thirsty and to combat this I usually drink a lot of water like 3-4 600mL bottles and sometimes more. Is this a bad thing if I drink a lot of water? I always get this dry sensation in my mouth that makes me want to drink water and when I drink I feel fine after a while. The thing is though I read online that you can have too much water so I was wondering what the limit would be?

Kind Regards,

Brief Answer:
It depends

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.

Feeling of thirst may be sign of certain disorder, but only if this is associated with other symptoms. It is recommended to drink at least 1600 ml water per day and in young people who exercise 2000. It also depends on environment, age and level of physical activity. Upper limit is not well defined but it should not exceed 3000 ml. The water should be clean drinking water.

So called hyperhydration or water poisoning is rare and usually happens in people with damaged liver or kidney and in older ones. In your age, increased thirst may indicate diabetes or hormonal disorders and if you have any doubts, or associated symptoms such as nausea, weight loss or urine color change then you should do tests .

Wish you good health.

I've been tested for diabetes and came back negative and I don't have any urine changes or nausea. I do suffer from GERD though so I find drinking water helps it a lot so would I be ok if stick under the 3000mL and yes I always drink clean water from bottles. What exactly are these hormonal disorders?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome back to HCM.

There are glands that regulate fluid balance, these are hypophysis , hipotalamus, suprarenal gland.

If there is disorder of their function it may lead to your symptoms.

However, I dont think this is your case if you don't drink more than 3000ml.

Also, you may have eaten to much salty food.

Please reduce salt and alcohol in your diet.

Wish you good health.
