What Causes Polyhydramnios During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Nov 2015
Question: I am 34 weeks pregnant and had a normal anomaly scan at 20 weeks. At a scan this week to check growth because of some high BP the baby was found to have small size, indentations in skull, hard to visualise cranial anatomy and polyhydramnios.
We are seeing foetal medicine next week.
is it possible/likely the polyhydramios could have affected the ability to see the skull/brain on the scan or does this sound more like a genetic problem? Desperate for answers but know we have to wait for re-scan with foetal medicine.

Brief Answer:
Fetal Doppler advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, thanks for trusting health care magic.
I understand your anxiety related to the ultrasound findings.
See the anomaly scan you had at 20 weeks largely rules out major genetic and congenital anomalies but still the reassuring percentage can never be hundred percent as there still can be numerous minor and major but simpler errors in genetic make-up of the baby which cannot be detected at that stage.
Moreover the findings on ultrasound are rather a reason for polyhydramnios (most likely) and not due to polyhyramnios.
So visit the fetal medicine specialist and in the meanwhile also get a fetal Doppler ultrasound done in case your fetal medicine doctor doesnt have one, which will give the doctor a much better idea.
All the best.
