Question : I bruised my ribs about a week ago. I just coughed a few minutes ago and something popped. I will be seeing my doctor in the morning, but do you know what may have caused this?

Brief Answer:
Are you in severe pains?

Detailed Answer:
HI and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this bruised ribs and the pop sound you have reported. This is probably a non pathological sound and which doesn’t represent any underlying disease condition unless this is accompanied by a severe pain as well. I will not be particularly moved to request that you see a doctor. I all rather recommend you stay calm and monitor only as cough will for sure not cause any severe bone lesion responsible for a popping sound. I hope to hear from you!

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services.

Thank you, that is calming to know.

It hurts quite a bit more than prior to the pop. I wouldn't say severe, but I get sharp pains if I move my torso in certain ways. I slipped on the ice a week ago and bruised them at that point. I didn't bruise them while coughing, but the pop occurred after a cough. I am icing it currently.

Brief Answer:
Icing, rest and Ibuprofen should be enough!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

This is typical of musculoskeletal pain. There is no need to be too anxious and seek aggressive medical care at this time. I will recommend the above measures to address this pain. Beyond that, all is well. Be calm and keep me posted.

I wish you well.
