What Causes Postnasal Drip?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Jul 2014
Question: I have had a lingering mucus drip in my throat and a cough. It is definitely better than 6 weeks ago but is lingering. About two weeks ago my XXXXXXX apple area because sore and crackly. It is sore to the touch, more so than swallowing. Not a sore throat in the common sense. There is still mucus in that area. Is this normal for this kind of virus?

Brief Answer:
need to rule out sinus infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and thanks for using healthcaremagic,
Mucus drip in the throat is due to a sinus infection.
Please see a doctor to confirm.

You will do well with an antibiotic course preferably of the penicillin group.
If in indeed turns out to be sinus infection then you should also use a local decongestant nose drops like otrivin. It helps to ventilate your sinuses which in turn helps to overcome infection.
Instill 3 drops in each nostril 3 times a day for 6 days and follow it up with steam.

Drink lots of water and avoid cold foods an drinks.
Avoid air condtioning and fan.

Do warm salt water gargling and give your voice some rest. Talk only when it is absolutely needed and avoid screaming and whispering.

If the cough is too much you will do well with a central cough suppressant like dextromethorphan, talk to your doctor.
