Brief Answer:
If you have a pregnancy test with HCG less than 5, you are not pregnant.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and i hope I can help you today.

Pregnancy symptoms vary widely between women, and many of the same symptoms people usually ascribe to pregnancy like bloating, breast tenderness, nausea, spotting, cravings and mood changes can also occur with the hormone imbalances that may cause an irregular period. Your abdomen does not enlarge when you are pregnant until well into the second trimester, so that symptom may be a sensation of bloating rather than any true enlargement of your abdomen.

A positive pregnancy test is considered any HCG level over 5mg/dl. So if you level is less than 2, you are not pregnant.

The most common reason women skip their period or are late is due to not ovulating that particular month. Skipping ovulation can occur by chance alone, but can be caused by stress, abrupt changes in your schedule, weight gain (or being overweight), or even some medical conditions like thyroid disease.

Your symptoms should resolve when you do get your period, which hopefully will be soon. The fact that you are spotting means that your cycle likely should begin in a few days. If you do not get any period by the end of this month, you may want to report to your physician for some hormone tests. A GYN doctor may also be able to prescribe medication that will make your period come and then all the hormonal symptoms you are experiencing should go away.

I hope i was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful. If you need anything further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
