What Causes Pressure In Armpit With Numbness In Arm?

Posted on Wed, 23 Dec 2015
Question: I am a 54 year old female. Woke up today with pain/pressure in my upper right armpit area. Has not gone away all day. Feels a little bit like pressure or numbness. I had my arm go numb before and went in and they told me I had a pinched nerve. I thought this might be that again but not numb like before.

Brief Answer:
Symptoms vary in nature probably due to intermittent nerve pinching

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The nerves which sense perception in the arm originate from the neck region of spinal cord. The nerve roots form a network, the brachial plexus which runs from the neck to the arm through the armpit region.

2. In some patients there can be intermittent pressure on one or more nerve roots which causes symptoms of pressure or numbness in the armpit region.

3. This pinching usually occurs in the cervical spine region. Rarely any condition of the right lung upper lobe or shoulder can also give these symptoms.

4. Therefore it is essential to get clinically examined and if required then investigations like x ray cervical spine and shoulder or MRI scan might be done.

5. The symptoms are different from before probably because of intermittent nerve pinching.

Hope your query is answered.
Please write back if you have any doubts.
